What is ILD

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) refers to a group of disorders that cause scarring (fibrosis) of the lung tissue. This scarring makes the lungs stiff, making it difficult for them to expand fully and for oxygen to pass into the bloodstream. People with ILD often experience symptoms like shortness of breath, a dry cough, and fatigue. As the disease progresses, it can become harder to breathe and do everyday activities.

ILD can be caused by various factors, including exposure to harmful organic or inorganic dust or certain medications, autoimmune diseases, or unknown reasons (idiopathic). While the scarring in ILD is usually irreversible, treatments may help slow the progression of the disease and manage symptoms. Early diagnosis and proper medical care are important to maintain lung function and improve the quality of life for those with ILD.
